American Technology
Services, Inc. (ATS) is a full-service
IT consulting firm serving
organizations throughout the
United States and Europe from
its headquarters in the Washington,
DC area. Founded in 1994, the
firm has broad experience in
network consulting, software
development, web site design,
development and hosting, and
web-related technologies.
One of ATS’ regular clients is a major imaging
shop in Maryland. The imaging shop specializes in taking
paper documents and other image files and OCR’ing
the content to PDF. The PDFs include the full images
overlaying “hidden” OCR’ed text.

The imaging shop had many
customers with the need to
tag the scanned documents with
specific fields. The users
had the need to be able to
search through a great number
of scanned documents in order
to find documents relating
to one specific item. They
also wanted to be able to do
this searching via a web-based
application. For example, one
of the imaging shop’s
customers is a major university
which operates a series of
medical clinics. The university
users had the need to search
through many documents for
specific case or clinic information.
ATS wrote the code allowing
for easy addition of fielded
data elements to the scanned-in
PDFs. “We automated the
process for tagging the PDF
imaged data with classification
elements, for combined field
and full-text searching using
the dtSearch Engine,” said
James Sun, VP, Software Services
at ATS. ATS further assisted
the imaging shop in packaging
the resulting data to separate
Web sites. “We embedded
dtSearch in an easy-to-use
Web-based architecture custom
designed for the imaging shop.
The dtSearch Engine API made
our task straightforward. The
imaging shop and its customers
have been highly pleased with
the results.”
