dtSearch Case Study — GVPi

GVPi Incorporates dtSearch Into E-Publishing Solution

“In addition to basic searching, we also built an advanced search page that more fully exposed all the rich features of dtSearch…. We also use dtSearch features to develop some ‘personalized’ search features for the publisher’s end-users.”
Located in the Washington DC area, GVPi began operations in 1988. The company’s product line includes hosted solutions for e-publishing, both online and on CD. The primary market for GVPi’s service is the publishing industry, along with government, law firms, the medical industry, and trade associations.

Recently, GVPi began integrating dtSearch developer products into a hosting solution for a professional publisher located in the DC area. After receipt of the basic data set, GVPi embedded additional metadata for additional field search capabilities. The company then stored the content in a database (HTML). The content changes on a frequent basis, requiring GVPi to update its base materials and its dtSearch indexes regularly. The hosting solution is fully commerce-enabled.

“dtSearch builds indexes much faster than other technologies we’ve seen, giving us much better customer response time. Search speed is very fast.”
"We use dtSearch to drive all of our searching on this site," said Kevin Blanchard, Director of Business Development, GVPi. "In addition to basic searching, we also built an advanced search page that more fully exposed all the rich features of dtSearch. dtSearch builds indexes much faster than other technologies we’ve seen, giving us much better customer response time. Search speed is very fast. We also use dtSearch features to develop some ‘personalized’ search features for the publisher’s end-users."

Other components of the site include:
A navigable table of contents and topic map;
Personalization features, including a viewing history;
A full citation line (the system also creates a unique internal ID for each document to facilitate research citations); and
Options for reformatting documents for print or email.

On the backend, the site also provides:
Secure access to content (including individual access as well as site license capabilities)
Access Control by Username/Password, IP range, referral page
Usage reporting tools
Subscription expiration reports and notifications
End user profile information.
