Image Capture Engineering (ICE) has
established itself in the imaging industry by building
stable, easy-to-use applications that provide the
power to handle complex tasks. ICE's flagship award-winning
application is LAW. LAW provides document capture,
image processing and data export into a variety
of litigation support applications.

For document capture, LAW's
main screen provides immediate access and feedback
for all scanning and indexing operations. Along
with standard scanner settings, LAW provides additional
scanning options to enhance productivity such
as: automatic page rotation, blank page dropout,
auto-deskew, and automatic document breaks (via
bar code recognition). LAW's multiple quality
control features ensure that images will match
originals. For image processing, LAW supports
adding numbers, footers, Bates stamping, and more,
all in a single batch process.

The final LAW process is data export. Explains
ICE's web site: "The final process involves
converting your data (images and index information)
for use by the document management application
of your choice. LAW provides exports to all of
the popular litigation support packages, and many
others. Converting your data simply requires selecting
the target application, the documents you wish
to convert, and the index fields that you wish
to export."
A related ICE application, Z-Print is a powerful
utility for batch printing or TIF conversion.
Many legal professionals are required to print
large collections of documents in a variety of
formats. Some of these exist in email files and
attachments, while others are in popular office
document formats, and still others are in image
formats. Z-Print allows printing of multiple files
or even entire folders or email folders without
any interaction by the user. ICE also exports
data from LAW and Z-Print to CD/DVD, for law firms,
service bureaus, and the like. In this way, ICE
provides its customers a convenient, universal
data export format, all with built-in searching.
In providing these services, ICE received multiple
customer requests to embed full-service text search
and retrieval functionality in connection with
LAW and later Z-Print and CD/DVDs. ICE chose the
dtSearch Text Retrieval Engine. "ICE application
engineers reviewed various applications for indexing
speed, search speed, accuracy and search options,"
said Jon Rowe, Executive Vice President of ICE.
"After several test projects, ICE determined
that dtSearch was the hands down winner."
Of prime importance to ICE was dtSearch's fuzzy
searching. "Some customers seem to have the
belief that if they perform OCR on their images,
all the information will be read, indexed and
easily found. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
Even the best OCR engines are not perfect. Broken
letters, multiple generations of copies, handwriting
and many other variables can contribute to OCR
mistakes." Adjustable from 0
to 10, dtSearch's fuzzy searching was ideally
suited to handling potential OCR errors.
