Consultants now working at Premirus Technologies Corporation created one of the largest repositories of legal information on the Internet. The repository consisted of millions of documents, including court rules and forms, state appellate court decisions, federal appellate court decisions, U.S. Supreme Court decisions, state and federal statutes, and international legal documents, all with citation cross references.

For searching the repository, Premirus chose the dtSearch Text Retrieval Engine. "Using the dtSearch Engine, our consultants operated one of the largest transactional systems on the Internet, all running under Windows.NET Advanced Server," said Kevin King, a Premirus founder and principal. "dtSearch worked wonderfully. During a year plus of production, on a Web database of about 100 gigabytes, we didn’t have a single dtSearch failure."

Premirus’ consultants wrote a COM+ dtSearch Engine wrapper to automate index creation and maintenance. "The dtSearch Engine is directly integrated into our core case tracking COM+ application. The indexing jobs, etc. are run via commands and custom datasource objects within the case tracking application. dtSearch handles incremental merges very well."

Premirus used the dtSearch Engine to provide both full-text searching and extensive fielded data support. "We integrated dtSearch with a large repository of HTML documents stored in SQL server, using both the HTML documents themselves and the individual SQL fields to provide meta data for fielded searches." Premirus used dtSearch’s "Xfilter" Engine feature to add on-the-fly custom fields.

"We populated a bunch of properties in dtSearch with the regular SQL fields. We used a large number of SQL properties, such as decision, year, modified data, statute title, document description, judge, court, etc., and made all of those fields searchable from dtSearch. In addition to allowing full-text searching, we then provided these special field searching capabilities through drop-down menus of fields." As for search speed: "dtSearch full-text searching was usually less than a second on about a hundred gigabytes of data — comparable to the SQL fielded data-only search speed!"
