PostalGuard Secure Messaging examines all outgoing email at the network gateway. Based on policies defined by an organization, the system automatically identifies content-based violations and redirects suspicious messages to a secure, encrypted channel for further processing. For example, suppose that an enterprise is working on a secret project code named KillerApp. Suppose further that an Executive with access to KillerApp work papers has a lunch meeting with a Competitor on an Unrelated Topic. The Executive sends an email to the Competitor with a standard protocol setting confirming lunch, and indicating that directions to the restaurant are attached. By mistake, however, instead of attaching the file containing directions to the restaurant, the Executive attaches the wrong file, setting forth KillerApp's design specifications.

An email security system that checked only the basic message protocols and/or provided full-text searching of only the text of email messages would let such an email pass. With full-text searching of attachments, however, Secure Messaging would catch the file containing KillerApp information, and either not let the email pass, or encrypt it in such a way that the Competitor, without having the proper encryption access, would find it useless.
