What
used to take hours is now instantaneous.

Manufacturers do more than just make things.
By making something, they also must certify it,
sell it, ship it, receive it - all of which takes
documentation. So by making some thing, manufacturers
also push a lot of paper. Seal Dynamics, Inc.
(SDI), of Deer Park, New York, is no exception.
For over 25 years, SDI has been a manufacturer,
distributor, and supplier of standard and custom
engineered products. Sixty employees run SDI out
of a 25,000 square-foot facility. Being ISO9002
certified, AS9000 compliant, and affiliated with
QS9000 manufacturing, SDI's employees work according
to strict industry standards.

At SDI, employees process about 120 invoices
each day, managing the 5,000 customers they serve
throughout the Aerospace, Industrial, Automotive,
Plumbing, Pharmaceutical, Semi-Conductor and Medical
industries. The standards, the customers, and
the volume over the years add up to mountains
of data that has to be effectively maintained.
For that, SDI chose Fortis document management
software from Westbrook Technologies.

The
payback comes with the quick retrieval rates.

To manage all inbound documents such as customer
purchase orders and vendor receipts (including
Material Certifications, FAA 8130s, JAA Form Ones,
Packing Lists, Invoices, etc.), SDI is using Fortis'
scanning capabilities. Customer Service and Warehouse
Operations both use Fortis to instantaneously
access these documents when and where they are
needed. This has greatly enhanced SDI's operations.
In addition to extensively relying on Fortis'
scanning features, the customer takes advantage
of the dtSearch Text Retrieval Engine's indexed
search capabilities, embedded into Fortis. According
to Westbrook Technologies' Partner Steve Young
of InfiNet Business Systems (IBS): "Currently,
IBS is developing a custom integration for SDI,
allowing indexing data to be updated from multiple
ODBC sources or tables through the use of either
a single unique parameter or through multiple
parameters running a SQL select statement. This
product, similar to Data Entry Assistant, allows
the insertion of the SQL statement into a field
at the time of configuration. This statement can
then run a SQL query allowing index data to be
updated from a database View (compilation of data
from multiple tables). The data can be updated
to the Fortis record at the time of indexing or
can be run in batch mode based on the results
of a Fortis query."
"What used to take hours is now instantaneous
with Fortis," said Vice President of Technology
Marc Alter of SDI. "The payback comes with
the quick retrieval rates." Alter said that
everyone who has been trained on Fortis loves
it.
