AppsPlus Uses dtSearch Engine .NET APIs to Develop Streamlined Web-Based Search Module for Global Telecom’s Oracle Database

“dtSearch’s suggested handling of large databases and the ability to create the custom data source was spot on”

“dtSearch data source class flexibility went a long way to making this project a success.”
A multi-billion dollar consulting company contracted with AppsPlus to build a custom indexing module for an Oracle database maintained by the consulting company’s global telecommunications customer. AppsPlus has years of experience in database development, and has been working with the dtSearch Engine for over a decade.

AppsPlus The consulting company needed to add full-text searching to the telecom’s Oracle database – consisting of over 5 years of customer support data compiled from various systems covering multiple products. The consulting company wanted to provide telecom users a streamlined search interface, including formatting the data so as to present potentially thousands and thousands of records resulting from a search in readable format.

“Originally, AppsPlus was going to act as a simple consultant,” explains Scott Barker, president, AppsPlus. “However, after the first couple of meetings, it was decided to have AppsPlus handle both the creation of the indexer and search web site interface.”

Working with the database creators both in the U.S. and offshore, AppsPlus built a flexible indexing module using the dtSearch Engine .NET APIs. “We created an indexer to break up the indexing of tables, with their child tables, and to loop through the base tables to handle the large record sets,” says Mr. Barker. “Working with up to billions of records, it wasn’t a question of dtSearch handling it; it was a question of optimizing access to Oracle with .NET datasets and memory management.”

“dtSearch’s suggested handling of large databases and the ability to create the custom data source was spot on,” adds Mr. Barker. “Between specifying which fields to include and ignore, and formatting the records, the dtSearch data source class flexibility went a long way to making this project a success.”

The final product had to take into account not only “local” usage of the Oracle database, but also usage of the database by offshore support teams. “Knowing that potential support users were not only offsite, but also offshore, we went ahead and created a windows service to handle the indexing so that data managers could start the index job remotely, then log off.” Added Mr. Barker after the project was complete: “It was awesome working as part of a team with companies that represent such quality products and people.”

AppsPlus specializes in Windows and web-based programming. AppsPlus clients for software development include industries ranging from the government, insurance, banking, medical analysis – even projects for Microsoft.
